Alan Shearer reportedly reduces appearances on Match of the Day
Alan Shearer has reportedly slashed his Match of the Day appearances following a major falling-out with one of the BBC’s most senior sporting figures, reports BritPanorama.
The Newcastle legend, a prominent figure on the show for years, is now said to limit his involvement to around one appearance per month amid escalating tensions behind the scenes.
According to the Daily Mail, the conflict centres on a dispute with BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski, sparked by events surrounding the Sports Journalism Awards. Shearer was reportedly neither informed about nor invited to attend the ceremony where Match of the Day was nominated for programme of the year, a prize it ultimately won. His frustration reportedly increased when there was no outreach from the management team to congratulate him afterward.
This brewing discontent led to a significant argument between Shearer and Kay-Jelski, which contributed to the former England captain’s decision to curtail his appearances on the show.
The disagreement unfolds during a turbulent period for the iconic BBC programme, following Gary Lineker’s departure. Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan have since taken over hosting roles, yet reports indicate broader unrest within the presenting, punditry, and production teams. Some staff are unhappy with Kay-Jelski’s vision for the future of Match of the Day, believing it diverges from BBC Sport’s traditional model.
One source highlighted internal dissatisfaction, stating, “The view inside Match of the Day is that Alex’s ego has grown out of control. His decisions and attitude have left a lot of people very angry and upset.” They further suggested that Kay-Jelski’s approach aims to transform the programme into something more akin to a YouTube model, causing significant unrest among staff.
Questions also surround the composition of the punditry team, with several familiar names notably absent from recent promotional materials. Martin Keown, Dion Dublin, Shay Given, Stephen Warnock, Nedum Onuoha, and Theo Walcott were all omitted, raising concerns over the direction of the show’s coverage.
Nonetheless, expectations remain for new faces to emerge among the pundit ranks, with Ashley Young, Robbie Keane, and Toby Alderweireld reportedly set to join, while Tottenham manager Thomas Frank is also anticipated to feature.
Despite the shake-up, Match of the Day returned for the new campaign over the weekend, with Chapman leading the show. Shearer appeared on the program, where he notably criticized Manchester United after their 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull.
