Tony Mowbray returns to Blackburn Rovers as manager
Tony Mowbray has made a remarkable comeback to Blackburn Rovers, taking charge at Ewood Park for a second time after agreeing a long-term contract with the Championship club, reports BritPanorama.
The 62-year-old’s appointment was confirmed on Friday evening, concluding a 24-day search for a permanent manager following Michael O’Neill’s departure. O’Neill had successfully guided Rovers to Championship survival but opted against a permanent role, choosing to continue as Northern Ireland’s head coach.
Mowbray’s return occurs four years after his initial tenure ended, with the club announcing he would start work immediately as preparations for the upcoming campaign commence. His first spell at Ewood Park spanned five years, during which he led the team to promotion back to the Championship after relegation to League One.
After establishing Rovers as a competitive side in the second tier, he departed when his contract expired in 2022, as the club believed they could progress further. However, subsequent years have been turbulent, with two near relegation experiences alongside a pair of seventh-place finishes, prompting the club’s recent managerial changes.
While Jon Dahl Tomasson succeeded him, stability in management has remained elusive since Mowbray’s exit. Following his departure from Blackburn, Mowbray managed Sunderland, achieving an unexpected top-six finish in their first season back in the Championship. His dismissal in December 2023 was viewed as harsh, and he later took the reins at Birmingham City.
It was during his time there that Mowbray faced a personal battle with bowel cancer, which he described as the “toughest year” of his life. Now fully recovered, he is eager to return to the field. “It almost feels like I’m coming back to finish the job, because the aim of every team in the Championship is to try and get to the Premier League,” he told RoversTV. Mowbray has also expressed that he is eager to share his passion for football, humorously noting his wife’s relief at having him back at work.
As Mowbray re-enters the fray, there is a palpable sense of both expectations and caution. The road ahead will test not just his managerial acumen but the resilience of a club seeking its former glory.
