Declan Rice battles illness but contributes to England’s World Cup victory
Declan Rice was bedridden for the better part of three days due to illness before playing a crucial role in England’s dramatic 2-1 World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway in Miami, reports BritPanorama.
Despite his recent health struggles, the Arsenal midfielder managed to start the match, though it was evident that he was not at his usual performance level amid the Florida heat and humidity.
Prior to his illness, Rice had been contending with a neural issue impacting his hamstring and lower back, making his place in the lineup even more remarkable. He has now started five of England’s six matches in the tournament.
After a first half in which England fell behind, Thomas Tuchel decided to substitute Rice at half-time as part of a tactical shift. “We wanted a more offensive change. We knew Declan would not last 90 minutes, nor 120 minutes, so we took him off,” Tuchel explained.
Tuchel emphasised that the decision was premeditated and not in response to any new injury. He noted that maintaining a substitution option for the latter stages of the match, especially with the prospect of extra time looming, was vital. Following the switch, England’s performance improved, with Jude Bellingham netting two goals to secure the team’s progression to the semi-finals.
England’s next challenge will be against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, set to kick off at 20:00 on Wednesday. Tuchel has indicated that the team will allow some recovery time, noting that while training intensity will be adjusted, the win itself will aid in recovery. “The next few days are crucial,” he stated.
As England readies for its semi-final clash, the resilience shown by players like Rice amid adversity stands as a testament to the team’s collective spirit and determination in the ongoing tournament.
