Sam Kerr scores in final Chelsea match

In her last match for Chelsea, controversial Australian footballer Sam Kerr scored a spectacular goal this afternoon, leading her team to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, reports BritPanorama.

Kerr’s goal came from a deep cross delivered by Lauren James, which she met expertly, volleying past goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce just eleven minutes before the halftime mark. This goal marked her 65th Women’s Super League (WSL) goal for Chelsea and her 116th in all competitions, putting her level with Fran Kirby as the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Despite Kerr’s impressive performance, Chelsea’s aspirations for the league title were dashed as Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory over Liverpool, ensuring they held onto second place in the final standings. Consequently, Chelsea finished third, a position that means they will not automatically qualify for the next season’s Champions League; instead, they will need to navigate the play-offs.

“It’s an amazing day,” Kerr told Sky Sports following the match, reflecting on her experiences against Manchester United, a team she noted has been the source of many of her favorite goals. However, the win did not suffice to achieve the desired season-ending results.

Manager Sonia Bompastor acknowledged the team’s efforts, stating, “We did what we could control, win the game – that was really important but was not enough unfortunately because Arsenal won.” The outcome represents a bitter end for a side that has lost the league title for the first time in seven years.

Kerr’s departure from Chelsea comes after a tumultuous period, including last year’s court case in which she was cleared of racially aggravated harassment. The 31-year-old spoke fondly of her time with the club, stating, “Chelsea and London will always be home to me now. It’s going to be hard to leave but I only have good things to say about this amazing club.”

As one chapter closes, the next for Sam Kerr may bring new challenges, yet her legacy at Chelsea, marked by standout performances and a significant impact, remains firmly set.
