Roman Abramovich accused of using major accountancy firm to conceal wealth and evade taxes

Abramovich’s legal team has dismissed allegations at the core of the investigation in Jersey, asserting that the inquiry is “undertaken for political purposes,” reports BritPanorama.

For nearly two decades, Abramovich represented Britain’s most prominent Russian oligarch, notably acquiring Chelsea Football Club in 2003 and financing the club’s most successful era.

However, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the UK Government imposed sanctions against him as a close associate of President Vladimir Putin, forcing him to sell the club.

Currently, he is believed to be residing in Turkey, a country that has refrained from enacting sanctions against him.

This unfolding situation underscores the significant shift in the landscape of international football ownership, where political tides can swiftly alter the status of even the most influential figures. The implications for both clubs and players, as well as broader geopolitical dynamics, remain a crucial conversation in the sporting world.
