Rescue of former Man City player Martin Demichelis and children highlights hazardous coastal conditions

Martin Demichelis rescued in sea with children near Uruguay

Martin Demichelis, the former Manchester City defender, was pulled from treacherous waters alongside his three children after powerful currents dragged them out to sea while swimming near Uruguay’s upmarket Punta del Este resort on New Year’s Eve, reports BritPanorama.

The 44-year-old’s children Bastian, 16, Lola, 12, and eight-year-old Emma were caught in dangerous conditions in an area without lifeguard supervision. His niece Camila was also swept up in the incident.

Footage of the dramatic rescue has spread rapidly across Argentina and Uruguay, with witnesses calling it miraculous that the family escaped unharmed. The incident occurred on 31 December at a location known as Eden Rock, though details only surfaced recently.

Surfers, who were off-duty lifeguards at the time, spotted the family in distress and rushed to their aid. Local beachgoers ran into the shallows to help as the group neared the shore. Video captured the harrowing moments as the children gripped a surfboard while being pulled back towards the beach through heavy waves. Demichelis himself could be seen propelling the board as his children held on tightly; onlookers burst into applause when everyone reached safety.

Unverified reports indicate the former Argentina international jumped into the water after noticing his children were in danger, prior to the surfers’ arrival. Uruguayan journalist Gustavo Descalzi highlighted the precarious nature of the location, stating, “It’s a miracle they’re alive.” He explained that while swimming is not prohibited in the area, the nearest lifeguard station is approximately one kilometre away.

Descalzi elaborated that the incident occurred during a lifeguard change-over, leaving two lifeguards away from their post when they heard the commotion. He described the stretch of coastline as particularly hazardous due to its depth and strong currents that can pull swimmers far from land.

Demichelis, who joined Manchester City in September 2013 on a two-year deal reportedly worth £4.2 million, won the Premier League title during his tenure at the club. As of now, he has not made any public statement regarding the incident. His estranged wife, Evangelina Anderson, was reportedly made aware of the situation involving her children.

Despite the frightening ordeal, all those involved emerged physically unscathed from what locals have described as an extraordinarily fortunate outcome given the perilous conditions.

In the world of football, moments of courage can shine as brightly as skill, revealing the heart of a player beyond the pitch — a reminder of how quickly the game can take a back seat to the more pressing matters of life and safety.
