Rafa Mir sentenced to over eight years for sexual assault

Former Wolves and Nottingham Forest striker Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison after being found guilty of committing sexual assault and assault causing injury, a court in the eastern Valencia region has ruled, reports BritPanorama.

Mir was arrested in September 2024 following a complaint lodged by a woman claiming sexual assault. The case unfolded when two young women were invited to continue their evening with Mir and another footballer at his home after meeting them at a nightclub in Valencia.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Mir assaulted one of the women both in the pool and in a bathroom at his residence. The court emphasized the victim’s consistent and credible testimony, corroborated by witness accounts and forensic evidence. Subsequently, the victim was awarded €64,000 (£55,300) in compensation.

The sentence is not yet final; on social media, Mir confirmed plans to appeal, stating, “I do not agree with the ruling, and we will appeal in the coming days. I still have faith in the justice system.” Currently on loan to LaLiga side Elche from Sevilla, Mir was under contract at Valencia during the time of the incident.

Sevilla released a statement expressing respect for judicial proceedings while firmly condemning any form of violence, abuse, or sexual assault. “Such conduct has no place in our society or in the values promoted by sport,” the club affirmed.

From his youth career with Valencia to a mixed spell at Wolves and loans to Las Palmas and Nottingham Forest, Mir’s trajectory has shifted dramatically. His successful move to Sevilla in 2021 saw him play 75 league matches and score 18 goals. The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with sporting influence.
