Pep Guardiola quips about weight loss following Manchester City's close win over Nottingham Forest

Manchester City edges past Nottingham Forest

Pep Guardiola joked that he shed all his festive weight gain during Manchester City’s nerve-shredding 2-1 triumph at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, reports BritPanorama.

The visitors had to be patient but secured all three points through Rayan Cherki, who continues to impress following his summer arrival from Lyon. Tijjani Reijnders was also on target for City, with Omari Hutchinson scoring an equaliser for the hosts in between.

“All the kilos I won over Christmas time in weight, today I lost it. I am fit again,” the City boss quipped to TNT Sports after watching his side edge past Sean Dyche’s team. Guardiola praised the mentality of his players, calling the attitude “unbelievable” and the result “really, really, really big three points.”

The victory propelled the Citizens to the top of the Premier League table, although Arsenal could reclaim first place later in the day should they overcome Brighton at home. Guardiola expressed admiration for Nottingham Forest’s performance, noting that they came agonisingly close to Champions League qualification last season.

“What a team Sean Dyche has made again,” he remarked, acknowledging the challenge posed by Forest. He highlighted the difficulty of playing at the City Ground during winter months and lauded the quality of the home side throughout the contest.

Guardiola also revealed that tactical adjustments made at half-time proved decisive in unlocking Forest’s stubborn defence: “There were too many players behind the ball and not the pockets. After when we break, move inside and outside, then we create chances.”

Midfielder Reijnders echoed his manager’s sentiment, stating that Forest effectively compressed spaces in the first half. “They made the spaces really tight so it was very difficult to find the free man in between the lines,” he said, explaining that changes in formation allowed City to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses in the second half.

The City boss credited assistant Pep Lijnders for his influential input in the tactical discussions. Reijnders highlighted Cherki’s vision and positioning as pivotal in City’s attacking strategy, showcasing the young forward’s ability to create crucial opportunities.

Ultimately, this match served as a reminder of the competitive spirit and resilience within the Premier League, where tactical mastery and player performances often dictate outcomes in closely contested fixtures.
