Michael Edwards departs Liverpool as FSG's plans for multi-club ownership falter

Michael Edwards departs Fenway Sports Group

Michael Edwards has left his position as Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football, bringing his second spell with Liverpool’s ownership group to an end, reports BritPanorama.

The former Reds sporting director completed his notice period after opting to step down, despite having 12 months remaining on the contract he signed upon his return in 2024.

According to The Athletic, Edwards informed FSG’s senior leadership of his decision last autumn. Instead of appointing a successor, the ownership group plans to return football operations oversight to president Mike Gordon.

Edwards’ return to Anfield followed Jurgen Klopp’s departure, during which he assumed the newly-created role of CEO of football. His decision to rejoin was heavily influenced by FSG’s intent to build a multi-club model, although these ambitions failed to materialize.

Initially joining Liverpool from Tottenham Hotspur in November 2011, Edwards rose through various roles, ultimately becoming sporting director in 2016. He was instrumental in assembling one of the most successful squads in Liverpool’s history, helping the club claim the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title the following season.

After stepping down from the sporting director role in 2022, Edwards spent time away from football, rejecting multiple offers from clubs across Europe, including Manchester United and Chelsea. Instead, he partnered with former Liverpool directory of research Ian Graham to launch the sports analytics consultancy, Ludonautics.

FSG persuaded Edwards to return two years later to navigate the club’s transition following Klopp’s exit. During his second tenure, he appointed Richard Hughes as sporting director and welcomed back Julian Ward as FSG technical director.

Further shifts in the club’s structure are expected, with Hughes anticipated to depart for a role with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal after the summer transfer window.

As Liverpool braces for a new chapter under Andoni Iraola’s leadership, the question of how the club will adjust without Edwards looms large — a reminder that change remains a constant in football.
