Mark Allen suffers semi-final heartbreak at World Snooker Championship
Mark Allen expressed his devastation after a crushing defeat to Wu Yize in the semi-finals of the World Snooker Championship at the Crucible, as the Northern Irishman squandered a golden opportunity to reach his maiden world final, reports BritPanorama.
Allen led 16-14 in the race to 17 frames, seemingly poised to secure his place in the final after sinking the pink in the penultimate frame. However, a missed routine black ball proved pivotal, and Allen’s failure to convert the shot allowed his opponent to seize the moment and take the decider.
The 22-year-old Wu demonstrated remarkable composure, turning what appeared to be a certain defeat into an unexpected victory that earned him a place in the final against Shaun Murphy.
In a candid post-match reflection, Allen was brutally honest about his performance. “You don’t deserve to be in a world final if you are missing a ball like that, it’s just pure pressure,” he said. “I had two or three good chances to close out the match but didn’t do it.”
Despite his disappointment, the 39-year-old acknowledged Wu’s skill, stating, “Even though I’m devastated to lose that match, I think the right person is in the world final. All credit to Wu; if he doesn’t win it this time, he is going to win world titles in future.”
This latest defeat marks Allen’s third semi-final exit at the Crucible, reinforcing a pattern of near-misses in his quest for the title. His missed black will likely haunt him, symbolising perhaps his best chance to reach the final. Wu, now set to face Murphy, noted the fortune that changed the course of the match, saying, “I feel sorry for Mark. I was losing the match, but I was able to catch the opportunity.”
As the final approaches, interest in Wu’s potential to emulate compatriot Zhao Xintong, who became the first Chinese player to win the championship in 2022, is palpable. The concluding match will offer a moment of truth for both players, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport.
