Erling Haaland, who had earlier missed a glorious opportunity, eventually found the net to make it 5-3 after another VAR check. Cue the relief.
City had their victory and, crucially, maintained their perfect league record. Liverpool had done their business in rather more understated fashion. One side produced a goal-fest; the other produced a grind. Both walked away with three points, and with the Premier League season beginning to take shape, neither will be complaining.
Liverpool got the job done. City got the job done in spectacular fashion. The pressure, as ever, is only going to increase from here.
