George Furbank’s debut marred by head injury
George Furbank’s Harlequins career got off to the worst possible start on Saturday when he was knocked unconscious less than a minute into his debut, reports BritPanorama.
The England full-back took his first carry during the pre-season fixture against Edinburgh and was struck by an accidental knee, leaving him motionless on the pitch. Medical staff rushed to attend to the stricken 29-year-old, who had joined the north London club over the summer.
Fortunately, Furbank was eventually able to leave the field on his feet after receiving treatment. Argentine back Rodrigo Isgro came on as his replacement after barely 60 seconds of action.
The setback represents yet another chapter in Furbank’s wretched run with injuries. Earlier this year, appendicitis forced him out of England’s Rugby Nations Championship curtain-raiser against South Africa. Before that, the 14-cap international had been plagued by physical problems spanning arm, calf, and knee complaints, as well as a previous concussion.
Those persistent fitness issues meant he managed only 25 outings across his final two campaigns at Northampton Saints, making his summer departure to Harlequins all the more significant as an opportunity to reset his career. The head injury now leaves Furbank’s availability for Harlequins’ Premiership opener against Bath in serious doubt. Given the severity of the blow and the mandatory return-to-play protocols surrounding concussion, another prolonged absence from the game looks all but certain.
It is a cruel twist for a player who moved to the Twickenham Stoop specifically to revitalise his career after years of frustration. With 14 England caps to his name, Furbank had hoped his switch across the Midlands would mark a turning point, but instead, he faces yet more time watching from the sidelines. Speaking to Planet Rugby about his transfer, Furbank had expressed optimism about the move.
“I’m hoping it reinvigorates, keeps me excited, keeps me hungry to get better,” he said. “I loved my time at Northampton; it was a pretty special way to bow out, but you can become comfortable at doing the same things week after week. A new environment and playing with different players is going to keep me motivated.”
He also spoke of wanting to contribute to a youthful Quins squad. “I feel like I can bring a good bit of leadership and a good bit of experience in situations that some of these boys have not been in before,” he added.
