Kylian Mbappe faces backlash over injury rehabilitation trip to Sardinia
Representatives for Kylian Mbappe have responded to the wave of criticism surrounding the Real Madrid forward’s trip to Sardinia with partner Ester Exposito during his injury rehabilitation, reports BritPanorama.
The 27-year-old travelled to Italy last week while his teammates prepared for their La Liga fixture against Espanyol, arriving shortly before Sunday’s match commenced.
His entourage dismissed the backlash in a statement: “Part of the criticisms are based on an overinterpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club.” They further insisted the criticism “does not reflect the reality of Kylian’s commitment and daily work for the team.”
Beyond the Sardinia controversy, reports have emerged of a confrontation between Mbappe and a member of Alvaro Arbeloa’s coaching staff during training. According to reports, the incident occurred before Los Blancos’ 1-1 draw with Real Betis a fortnight ago, with Mbappe directing angry language towards a staff member acting as an assistant referee after being flagged offside.
Notably, Mbappe’s representatives did not deny this altercation when addressing the wider criticism, describing reactions to his conduct as “exaggerated.” The training ground atmosphere at Valdebebas has reportedly deteriorated, with the forward facing mounting pressure to demonstrate leadership qualities.
French publication L’Equipe has detailed further grievances within the squad, with some players reportedly growing increasingly frustrated by what they perceive as preferential treatment afforded to the former Paris Saint-Germain star. Specific incidents cited include a 40-minute delay to a team meal and behaviour characterised as distant or arrogant towards staff members.
The report suggests Mbappe is becoming progressively isolated from his teammates, though his relationships with fellow France internationals at the club remain intact. Internally, Real Madrid officials have also expressed concern about the striker’s lack of discretion and his apparent failure to recognise how his actions affect the club’s image during an already disappointing campaign.
Supporter frustration has now spilled onto social media platforms, where viral messages calling for “Mbappe out” have gained traction ahead of Sunday’s crucial El Clasico encounter. Barcelona could secure the La Liga title with victory this weekend, adding further pressure to an already fraught situation at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid have declined to comment on whether the Frenchman will be fit for the fixture, though Spanish press reports indicate he made a voluntary visit to the training ground on his day off in an attempt to prove his readiness. Despite the turmoil, Mbappe’s statistics remain impressive, with 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions this season.
As the pressure mounts, one can’t help but reflect on how often the brightest stars find themselves under the most intense scrutiny—perhaps a reminder that in football, brilliance and controversy often go hand in hand.
