Katie Boulter overtakes Emma Raducanu in WTA rankings
Katie Boulter has reclaimed her position as Britain’s leading female tennis player, overtaking Emma Raducanu in the latest WTA rankings published on Monday, reports BritPanorama.
The 29-year-old rose 11 places to world number 60 following her showing at the Cincinnati Open, where she secured a victory over Katie Volynets in the second round.
Raducanu, meanwhile, slipped nine spots to 68th owing to her continued absence from the tour through injury. Only Boulter and Raducanu currently sit inside the WTA’s top 100 among British women, with Francesca Jones the next highest-ranked at 104th.
Raducanu’s 2026 campaign has been beset by misfortune from the outset. A foot problem curtailed her 2025 season prematurely, hampering her preparations for the new year. She parted ways with coach Francisco Roig after January’s Australian Open.
Upon returning to action, the former US Open champion suffered consecutive defeats on clay at Strasbourg and Roland Garros. A resurgence appeared to be under way on the grass at Queen’s Club, where she rediscovered impressive form. Yet the compressed schedule — three matches across just two days owing to rain delays — took its toll, and she developed a lower leg complaint. That niggle subsequently proved to be a stress fracture, compelling her withdrawal from Wimbledon on the eve of the Championships. The 23-year-old has not competed since.
Her omission from Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup squad for the finals, scheduled from 22 to 27 September, underscores the severity of her situation. No date has been set for her return to competition.
With Raducanu certain to miss the US Open, which begins later this week, her ranking is expected to deteriorate further still. Depending on results at Flushing Meadows, the former world number 10 could find herself outside the top 80 by the tournament’s conclusion. This represents a painful decline for a player who demonstrated at Queen’s Club that she remains capable of competing at the highest level when fully fit.
Boulter’s own recent form offers little cause for unbridled optimism, however. The Leicestershire player managed just a single win from four outings during the North American hard-court swing. Her first-round departure from last year’s US Open, where she fell to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets, does present a silver lining. Having collected only 10 ranking points at Flushing Meadows in 2025, she has considerable room to improve her standing this fortnight, with a run to the third round alone yielding an additional 120 points.
Whether Boulter can capitalise on that opportunity remains to be seen. Her serve has long been identified as a vulnerability, and consistency continues to elude a player whose talent is not in question but whose results have yet to match it with any regularity. The upcoming matches will certainly test her resolve, but also offer a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in professional sports.
