The hidden cost of procrastination: how unfinished tasks drain your energy

The ongoing recognition of mental burdens from unfinished tasks has prompted some to address their procrastination habits more directly. Individuals are openly discussing these ‘open loops’ in their lives on social media and through podcasts, sharing a collective realization that unresolved issues occupy mental space and energy, reports BritPanorama.

Florence Friebe, a New Yorker, exemplifies this shift; her awareness of open loops manifests in various aspects of her life, such as a neglected hole in her jacket pocket that reminds her of unfinished business every time she drops her keys. This ongoing habit of avoidance not only disrupts daily routines but also contributes to a larger pattern of mental strain.

Experts in psychology note the importance of recognizing procrastination as a significant issue. Dr. Vara Saripalli, a clinical psychologist, explains that the inertia often stems from individuals focusing too heavily on the immediate ‘cost’ of tasks—time, energy, and emotional fatigue—while neglecting the longer-term consequences of inaction.

Chronic procrastination can lead to detrimental impacts on both mental and physical health. Dr. Fuschia Sirois, a professor at Durham University, identifies a range of issues linked with prolonged procrastination, including anxiety, low self-esteem, and even chronic disease. Over her 25 years of research, Sirois has observed that individuals often suffer from stress-related ailments, stemming from the guilt associated with procrastination.

Lanna, a Pilates instructor in Germany, shares that procrastination has manifested as physical symptoms, impacting her overall well-being. Despite the negative effects, many find that awareness of these damaging patterns does not necessarily lead to immediate action to change them.

Understanding why you procrastinate

For many individuals, the roots of procrastination are intertwined with complex emotional responses to tasks. Experts suggest that two main causes emerge: negative emotions related to specific tasks or fears associated with potential failure. This phenomenon highlights a broader societal issue wherein the fear of finality and loss of options can paralyze decision-making, even regarding minor responsibilities.

Friebe discovered that her struggles with procrastination were linked closely to her mental health conditions, including ADHD and depression. After receiving her diagnosis, she described a sense of relief, indicating that understanding her challenges allowed her to begin addressing them more effectively.

Turning awareness into action

Transforming self-awareness into actionable change can be a gradual process. Both Friebe and Lanna have sought professional assistance and adapted their habits to improve their productivity. According to Sirois, the support of therapists can be invaluable, helping individuals challenge negative thought patterns that fuel procrastination.

Adopting small, incremental steps towards task completion has proven helpful for Friebe, who has learned to schedule her time more effectively, breaking down her responsibilities into manageable tasks. This method contrasts sharply with all-or-nothing thinking, which frequently exacerbates feelings of overwhelm.

The journey to overcoming procrastination is multifaceted, closely involving individuals’ emotional states and their responses to the tasks they face. In recognising procrastination’s complexities, individuals like Friebe and Lanna demonstrate that addressing underlying issues can lead to broader changes in self-esteem and personal fulfilment. It becomes evident that the narrative surrounding procrastination continues to evolve, reflecting deeper psychological truths and societal patterns.
