Jorge Martin hospitalized after crash at Barcelona

Jorge Martin was transported to hospital on Monday morning after suffering his sixth crash of the Barcelona weekend during the post-race test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, reports BritPanorama.

The 2024 MotoGP world champion fell from his Aprilia at the high-speed Turn 7 approximately ninety minutes into the session, prompting a red flag. Initial examinations at the circuit’s medical centre detected no visible fractures to his left elbow and right leg. However, medical staff fitted him with a neck brace before transferring him to Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona for further assessment.

Photographers at the scene reported that Martin was conscious and moving his limbs. The incident capped a troublesome weekend for the Spaniard, whose difficulties began during Friday’s practice session, where he sustained a mild concussion after sliding into his own bike at Turn 12.

Despite visibly shaken, he was cleared to continue and even completed a practice start. His troubles persisted throughout the weekend, culminating in a crash during both qualifying and the sprint race while running in sixth position on Saturday. On Sunday, Martin’s race ended early when he was involved in a collision with Trackhouse rider Raul Fernandez on the opening lap of the restarted grand prix, where he had been running in second place.

Following the Turn 7 incident, Aprilia confirmed that Martin underwent checks at the circuit’s medical centre. “Examinations revealed no visible fractures, but it was decided to take Martin to the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona for further tests,” the team stated. Subsequent scans confirmed the absence of fractures.

The incident has considerably affected Martin’s title defence, now leaving him 15 points behind teammate Marco Bezzecchi after arriving in Catalonia just a single point off the lead. Martin was not alone in facing a challenging weekend, with both Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco also hospitalized following separate incidents on Sunday. Gresini confirmed that Marquez underwent successful surgery and is expected to leave hospital later on Monday after a collision triggered by a mechanical failure on Pedro Acosta’s KTM.

LCR has yet to provide additional details on Zarco’s condition following his Turn 1 crash.

The chaotic events in Barcelona serve not only as a reminder of the risks inherent in MotoGP but also highlight the narrow margins that define a championship season. As competitors face the relentless pace of the calendar, the unpredictability on the circuits adds a layer of intrigue and drama that continues to shape the narrative of the championship.
