Javier Mascherano resigns as Inter Miami head coach
Javier Mascherano has stepped down as Inter Miami boss after just over a year at the helm, citing personal reasons for his decision, reports BritPanorama.
The Argentine, who took charge of David Beckham’s MLS outfit in late 2024, delivered a historic performance during his tenure, including the club’s first MLS Cup triumph in 2025 and a first-place finish in the Eastern Conference.
Mascherano’s time in charge saw the team register 101 goals across regular and postseason matches, a record-breaking tally for a single MLS campaign. His side also distinguished itself globally by becoming the first MLS club to reach the knockout stage of the FIFA Club World Cup.
During his spell, he managed 67 matches, winning 38, and left the club positioned positively just seven games into the 2026 MLS season. His final match was a 2-2 draw against New York Red Bulls, which left the team in decent shape.
“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano stated. He expressed gratitude to the club, especially to the players, for the “unforgettable moments” created during his time in South Florida.
Mascherano’s legacy is seen as a remarkable achievement within a short period, with co-owner Jorge Mas noting that he “will forever be part of this Club’s history” and holds a special place in the Inter Miami family. In line with Mascherano’s departure, former player Guillermo Hoyos will take over as manager for the upcoming fixtures.
The coaching shuffle adds another layer to the constantly evolving landscape of Major League Soccer, where the pressure for immediate results and success is palpable. In a league where even the most celebrated figures must continually adapt, Mascherano’s resignation serves as a vivid reminder of the turbulent nature of football management and the personal sacrifices often underlying pivotal career decisions.
