Emma Raducanu exits French Open in first round, raising concerns

Emma Raducanu’s career faced another setback as she exited the French Open in the first round, following a straight-sets defeat to Argentina’s Solana Sierra, raising growing concerns from former British No 1 Greg Rusedski, reports BritPanorama.

In a lacklustre performance at Roland Garros, the 2021 US Open champion lost 6-0, 7-6, marking the end of her clay-court campaign without a single victory; she had previously suffered defeat in her second match in Madrid. Her current form extends a troubling trend, having lost six of her last seven matches.

Raducanu’s emotional post-match press conference laid bare her frustrations with fitness and form. “She was a little bit emotional,” Rusedski reflected on the latest episode of Off Court Cuts. “It is pretty normal because you want to win and do your best, and your health is your wealth.”

The 23-year-old’s recent struggles have been exacerbated by injuries and illness, limiting her ability to build momentum. Earlier this season, Raducanu missed several matches while recovering from illness during the Middle East swing.

Despite these challenges, Rusedski expressed optimism towards her reunion with coach Andrew Richardson, who had previously guided her to victory at the US Open as a teenager. “It is nice to see them back together. I hope she is healthy and can continue,” he stated, indicating potential for a turnaround as she shifts focus to grass courts.

Historically, Raducanu has performed well on faster surfaces. Rusedski noted, “We wish her well and hope to see some form coming back on the grass courts.” Having pushed world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka hard at Wimbledon last year, there remains hope that her game may flourish as she prepares for upcoming tournaments in Queen’s and Eastbourne, alongside the Berlin Open.

Ultimately, Raducanu’s path to reclaiming her form remains fraught with uncertainties. The continuous cycle of injuries and match losses presents a daunting challenge not only for her but for British tennis as a whole, with many wishing for a smooth season ahead.

As the grass season approaches, she may find her stride, but the mental burden of disrupted progress looms large. It serves as a reminder that in the world of tennis, the journey can often be as turbulent as the victories are sweet.
