George Russell takes pole position at Azerbaijan Grand Prix
George Russell has secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a notable development as Kimi Antonelli’s world championship campaign faced a setback, reports BritPanorama.
The British driver delivered an impressive lap time, finishing over eight tenths ahead of Charles Leclerc, who qualified second, while Oscar Piastri rounded out the top three.
Russell expressed surprise at the significant margin, stating he was pleased with his “very good lap.” Reflecting on the achievement, he remarked, “It has been a while [since being on pole] so definitely feels good.”
He added, “It’s probably the biggest margin of my whole career, even including F2 and F3 days. The lap felt really sweet. The car has been feeling great this weekend, and on a track like this, when you can hook it up like that, it feels really amazing. It was just the perfect lap at the end.”
In contrast, championship leader Antonelli encountered difficulties, hitting the wall at turn one and sustaining damage that could not be repaired in time for Q2. The race engineer informed him that the damage was significant, which elicited an emotional response from Antonelli. “I’m sorry guys. My god,” he said, to which Bonnington reassured him, “No sweat, Kimi.”
Antonelli will start the race from 16th position. Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar qualified fourth in his first race back after recovering from a wrist injury. Lando Norris, who struggled with a lock-up on turn three, will start fifth, while Lewis Hamilton will line up in sixth position.
With Russell emerging as the favourite to win his third race of the season on Saturday, anticipation builds for an exciting showdown in Baku.
