Wales rugby legend George North has confirmed he will retire at the end of the season, having spent the last two seasons playing for Provence in the French second division, reports BritPanorama.

The 34-year-old, who is married to double Olympic silver medallist Becky James, moved to France in 2024 following notable tenures at the Scarlets, Northampton Saints, and the Ospreys.

North is celebrated for his international career, having earned 124 caps for Wales and the British & Irish Lions. Notably, he is Wales’s second all-time top tryscorer, with a tally of 47 tries, just 11 behind Shane Williams.

In a video posted on X, North stated: “Hi guys, I just want to come on here and let you know at the end of the season I’ll be retiring. For me, it’s the right time. I’ve been able to live out my childhood dream for many seasons, playing with some of the best players, coaches and the staff behind. I can’t thank my family, my friends and you guys enough for the support you’ve shown me over the years. Honestly, it’s meant the world to me. The next chapter? Still working on that one, but I’m excited to see where that journey takes me. So again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. Diolch.”

North’s career has been marked by several memorable moments, showcasing his raw power and finishing ability. A standout incident came in 2013 during the second test of the British & Irish Lions tour against Australia, where he executed a remarkable fireman’s lift on Israel Folau while carrying the ball.

That same year, he cemented his place in British & Irish Lions history by scoring a stunning solo try against Australia, showcasing an impressive side-step and explosive pace. His finger-wagging gesture towards Berrick Barnes following the try made him a household name.

Making his debut at the age of 18, North scored two tries against reigning world champions South Africa, becoming the youngest player to score on debut. His career includes two Grand Slams in 2012 and 2019, and he added two more Six Nations championships to his achievements in 2013 and 2021. Additionally, he was named in World Rugby’s team of the decade in 2020, reflecting his standing in an impressive line-up of international talent.

As North approaches retirement, his legacy in the sport will endure, a poignant reminder of the extraordinary contributions he has made to Welsh rugby.
