Gary Neville advocates for defensive changes ahead of England’s clash with Ghana

Gary Neville believes Thomas Tuchel should make two defensive changes for England’s World Cup clash with Ghana, drafting in Marc Guehi and Djed Spence at the expense of John Stones and Nico O’Reilly, reports BritPanorama.

The former Manchester United defender expects Tuchel to freshen up his backline despite England opening their campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas. Harry Kane struck twice, while Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also contributed to the scoreline, propelling the Three Lions to the top of Group L. However, Neville expressed concerns that the goals conceded exposed weaknesses which Ghana could look to exploit.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Neville predicted Tuchel would adjust his defence for Tuesday’s encounter. “I do expect changes,” he stated, pointing out that Ghana boasts mobile players like Antoine Semenyo and Brandon Thomas-Asante, who can excel in one-on-one situations. He posited that Guehi, with his pace and duelling ability, would be well-suited to contend with Ghana’s attacking threats.

Neville suggested that Spence, who impressed after coming on against Croatia, could also feature prominently, potentially at the expense of O’Reilly. “Stones has got very good experience,” he explained, “but I do think we could see Guehi come in, being someone who can handle one-vs-one situations a little bit more.” He noted Spence’s aggressive playstyle and offensive contributions, suggesting that adaptability within the defence would be essential against Ghana’s pace.

Neville praised England’s second-half performance against Croatia, highlighting Tuchel’s tactical boldness during the match. “It was probably the best 10 to 15 minutes we’ve seen from any team in the tournament so far,” he added. With England facing Ghana, a victory could place them on the brink of securing qualification for the knockout stages, followed by a match against Panama. However, Ghana, fresh from a recent win against Panama, are not to be underestimated.

As England prepares for this crucial match, the balance between defensive adjustments and the maintenance of recent momentum will be pivotal in determining their success.
