Concerns grow over Jon Rahm’s potential exit from LIV Golf
Concerns are mounting inside LIV Golf that Jon Rahm is preparing to walk away from the breakaway circuit, with insiders now “almost resigned” to losing the Spaniard, reports BritPanorama.
The DP World Tour is increasingly confident that the former world number one will feature prominently on the European tour from 2027 onwards. According to The Telegraph, Rahm is expected to reach a final decision within the next few weeks, contingent upon clarity regarding LIV’s future funding arrangements.
The DP World Tour has been informed of Rahm’s likely intentions, adding weight to speculation about his return. His departure would present a significant blow to LIV’s efforts to secure the necessary investment to sustain operations into the upcoming season and beyond.
Rahm, who moved to LIV Golf in December 2023 for a reported deal exceeding $300 million, has garnered four victories on the Saudi-backed circuit and claimed three successive individual season-long titles, the latest at LIV Golf New York earlier this month. However, his performances at major tournaments have markedly declined, attributed by many to the lower standard of competition on LIV and a schedule lacking championship-calibre events.
The apparent root of Rahm’s dissatisfaction lies in LIV’s proposed new direction. Sources indicate he is unenthusiastic about a revamped format that would include only 10 events per season and significantly smaller prize funds.
Should he leave LIV, a return to the DP World Tour appears most likely. Earlier this year, Rahm reached an agreement with the Wentworth-based organisation to settle all outstanding fines incurred since joining LIV. Despite having multiple years left on his contract, which reportedly includes an outstanding amount of $200 million, any departure may result in a negotiated settlement of those financial commitments.
Rahm’s possible exit would contribute to an ongoing exodus of marquee players from LIV; Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have already left. LIV chief executive Scott O’Neil has expressed a desire for players like Rahm to remain but stopped short of confirming his ongoing involvement. “We would certainly love them to come along for the ride and journey because they carry maybe more weight than anybody in the game,” O’Neil remarked.
Rahm himself has taken a cautious stance, stating, “I’m always optimistic. I play a game for a living. I can’t really be too upset about how things are going in life.”
