Balogun acknowledges nerves in USA camp amid World Cup suspension controversy
Folarin Balogun has admitted the controversy surrounding the suspension of his World Cup ban created nerves inside the United States camp before their heavy last-16 defeat to Belgium, reports BritPanorama.
The USA striker became a focal point of one of the tournament’s most significant debates after FIFA suspended his automatic one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This decision followed public concerns raised by the White House regarding the situation, which ignited a broader discussion about FIFA’s handling of player conduct.
Speaking to CBS Mornings, Balogun noted that the unprecedented circumstances impacted preparations for the knockout match. “My initial reaction was that I was happy to be back in the team,” he said. “But when I started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy. And I could almost see within my team-mates a bit of nerves because it’s something that is so unique.”
Less than 24 hours before the match against Belgium, FIFA announced that his suspension had been put on hold, allowing him to participate. Although some greeted the decision with skepticism regarding the timing and influence behind it, Balogun returned to the squad. Ultimately, the United States suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium, concluding their World Cup journey.
Reflecting on the events, Balogun expressed confusion over the initial red card decision, insisting it was not a dismissible offense. “I was totally in shock,” he remarked. “When something is not intentional it should never be a red card. It was just an unfortunate situation and I think it put a lot more pressure on us than we needed.”
He also described the emotional atmosphere within the squad when they learned about the suspension being lifted, recalling, “We found out on the team bus. Everybody was screaming and shouting. It was a pretty intense bus ride to the practice field.” Despite the distractions, Balogun emphasized the team’s professionalism and focus as they prepared for the crucial knockout match.
Balogun finished the tournament as the USA’s leading scorer with three goals. While the team’s aspirations for World Cup glory were cut short, he regarded the overall experience as “amazing,” highlighting the complexities and pressures athletes face on the world stage, underscoring how quickly a narrative can shift when politics intersects with sports.
