Jason Watkins stars in new thriller series
Jason Watkins is set to return as the lead in the psychological thriller The Game, much to the excitement of fans. The series, which airs on Channel 5, features Watkins alongside Robson Green, who portrays an imprisoned serial killer. The narrative explores the dynamic between the characters as they engage in psychological manipulation, reports BritPanorama.
Watkins steps into the role of Huw Miller, a recently retired detective whose hopes for a peaceful life are shattered by the challenges that arise in the new season. The show plays on the tension between his character and Green’s, as Huw struggles to maintain control while dealing with the malevolence of Patrick Harbottle.
Reflecting on his current position, Watkins remarked on the difference between supporting and leading roles, stating, “When you’re playing a supporting character… you are not necessarily taking on the burden of the whole production.” He values the chance to fully develop his character’s complexities in a primary role. He likened it to an artist being invited to paint a complete portrait rather than merely detailing a part.
Although soon to turn 64, Watkins expresses a youthful outlook and a profession that reflects his passion for character-driven roles. After training at RADA, he carved a path through television, theatre, and film, developing a considerable body of work that includes over 140 appearances. He gained wider recognition through hit comedies like Trollied and the self-parodying W1A.
Watkins’s versatility has allowed him to take on serious roles, including playing Harold Wilson in The Crown and the lead in the acclaimed true crime drama The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies. His portrayal of Jefferies earned him significant praise, demonstrating his ability to connect with audiences on various themes.
The current series of The Game features a detective who is portrayed as deeply flawed and relatable, contrasting the typical invincible characters in similar genres. Watkins noted the importance of authenticity in depicting the emotional complexities of his character when interacting with the imprisoned killer.
Three months before landing a pivotal role in Trollied, tragedy struck when Watkins’s two-year-old daughter, Maud, passed away from sepsis. He and his wife, Clara, have since used their experience to raise awareness through their documentary, Jason & Clara: In Memory of Maudie.
Despite the challenges posed by such a personal subject, Watkins expressed gratitude for the support received from viewers. He acknowledged that balancing personal experiences with acting can lead to skepticism about his roles, but it has also made him more relatable.
Looking to the future, Watkins remains committed to his craft while exploring new creative avenues, such as writing a novel and continuing his collaboration with fellow artists. His desire to engage in diverse projects reflects a dedication to broadening his artistic expression beyond acting.
The Game series two premieres tomorrow at 9pm on Channel 5.
