Fifa dismisses proposal for Italy to replace Iran at World Cup

Fifa has firmly rejected a proposal by Donald Trump’s envoy suggesting that Italy replace Iran at the upcoming World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

Paolo Zampolli presented this idea to both the US President and Fifa President Gianni Infantino, advocating for the four-time World Cup champions to be included despite their failure to qualify through regular means.

In response, Infantino reiterated Fifa’s commitment to Iran’s participation, stating, “The Iranian team is coming, for sure.” He expressed hope for improved circumstances leading up to the tournament, emphasizing that “they really want to play, and they should play.”

Zampolli has confirmed to the Financial Times that he suggested the plan, articulating his desire to see Italy compete at a tournament hosted in the USA, citing their pedigree with four titles as justification for inclusion.

This proposal arises amid heightened tensions following the recent military actions involving the US and Israel against Iran, which have thrown the latter’s World Cup participation into doubt. Zampolli’s initiative seems also intended to mend strained relations between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, following Trump’s critical remarks regarding Pope Leo XIV during the Iran conflict.

Iran qualified for the tournament by finishing among the top Asian teams, while Italy experienced a catastrophic failure to secure a place for the third consecutive World Cup, following a penalty shootout loss against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Iranian football federation has stated its full intention to participate in the tournament. Under Fifa’s regulations, the governing body holds complete authority over decisions if a nation withdraws from the competition.

The World Cup is set to commence on June 11, with matches hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, concluding with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19. Iran will kick off their campaign against New Zealand on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium and concluding the group stage against Egypt. Fifa maintains the sole discretion over any actions should Iran choose to boycott the competition.

As the tournament approaches, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable intertwining of global politics and sports, where the stakes transcend the pitch and echo through international relations.
