FIFA imposes sanctions on Argentina following World Cup final brawl

FIFA has imposed sweeping sanctions on Argentina in the wake of the ugly scenes that followed their 1-0 defeat to Spain in last month’s World Cup 2026 final in New York, reports BritPanorama.

Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, drawing a ten-match suspension after he was observed hurling Spanish player Gavi to the ground during the post-match fracas. Defender Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match ban along with a fine of 90,000 US dollars (approximately £66,000) for his involvement in the same altercation.

Thiago Almada escaped with a single-match suspension and a 30,000 USD (£22,000) penalty. Argentina’s coaching staff member Roberto Ayala, who also engaged in the disturbance, was barred from the touchline for three matches and fined 30,000 USD.

Notably, Gavi received a one-match suspension and an identical 30,000 USD fine for his part in the confrontation. The Argentine Football Association faced penalties totalling 321,000 USD for multiple offences under FIFA’s disciplinary code.

The governing body’s disciplinary committee investigated potential violations of its code in connection with the incident. Among the charges were the use of a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations—referencing the Falkland Islands banner displayed by players after their semi-final triumph over England.

Further penalties addressed discriminatory chanting and gestures by Argentine supporters during the tournament as well as broader failures relating to team misconduct and the maintenance of order and security at matches. The financial sanctions spanned four separate articles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, underscoring the breadth of the governing body’s displeasure with the three-time world champions.

Additionally, Argentina has been ordered to stage their next two home fixtures behind closed doors, although FIFA has suspended one match of that particular sanction. The severity of the punishments reflects the governing body’s determination to make an example of the defeated finalists, whose conduct in New York drew widespread condemnation.

Paredes himself faces the longest spell on the sidelines, with his ten-match ban and 90,000 USD fine representing one of the stiffest individual penalties handed down in recent World Cup history. FIFA’s comprehensive response sends a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated at football’s grandest occasion.

As the dust settles on a tumultuous World Cup campaign, one thing remains clear: the lines between sport and conduct continue to blur, leaving teams to reckon with the consequences of their actions long after the final whistle has blown.
