FIFA dismisses Belgium’s appeal over Balogun’s eligibility

FIFA has dismissed Belgium’s appeal against the decision allowing American forward Folarin Balogun to play in the World Cup knockout match in Seattle, reports BritPanorama.

The FIFA Appeal Committee, led by member Salman Al-Ansari, ruled the Belgian appeal as inadmissible, affirming the previous decision that deemed the 25-year-old striker eligible to participate.

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) acknowledged receiving the committee’s decision but expressed frustration over the lack of justification provided. “To date, the RBFA has still not received any grounds for this decision, nor has it received the information it has been requesting since the start of this procedure,” stated the Belgian FA.

Belgium has formally notified US Soccer that it contests Balogun’s eligibility should he appear on the teamsheet tonight. The Belgian FA has accused FIFA of engineering an inadmissible appeal process.

According to the RBFA, they became aware of FIFA’s decision through media reports and subsequently requested documentation regarding the appeal procedure. The association indicated that FIFA’s reply implied their correspondence constituted an appeal, which was met with tight deadlines for completion. FIFA’s guidelines stipulate a reasoned decision must precede any valid appeal.

Adding to the tension, Belgium claimed FIFA neglected to discuss automatic player suspensions during a pre-match coordination meeting, a departure from standard protocol observed in past fixtures. Belgium’s head coach, Rudi Garcia, voiced criticism of the entire episode, stating, “I didn’t know that at the World Cup the 5th July is now April 1st and is now April Fool’s Day.”

Garcia emphasized that Belgium’s actions are a defense of football’s ethics and history, remarking, “It’s the first time in WC history that such a decision has been taken.” When pressed on claims of external influence, including references to a phone call from Donald Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, he declined to engage, telling journalists to stay focused on football-related questions.

This contentious issue traces back to Balogun’s red card during the USA’s group stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on 1 July, due to a challenge on defender Tarik Muharemovic. Following this, it was reported that the President of the United States had personally contacted FIFA regarding the one-match suspension. Infantino confirmed the call but reiterated that FIFA’s judicial processes operate independently.

In a notable outcome, FIFA has suspended Balogun’s one-match ban for a probationary year under article 27 of their Disciplinary Code. The RBFA’s president, Pascale Van Damme, who is also a FIFA Council member, traveled to Seattle amid ongoing discussions and Belgium is reportedly exploring legal options, including a potential appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

As the match unfolds tonight, the layers of bureaucracy and controversy surrounding Balogun’s eligibility continue to reverberate, casting a shadow over the sporting exchange set to take place on the pitch.
