England squad delays travel to Mexico City amid security probe

The England squad has postponed their travel to Mexico City due to an urgent security investigation led by the FA, reports BritPanorama.

After securing a 2-1 victory over DR Congo on Wednesday, the Three Lions decided to return to their base in Kansas City rather than advance to the Mexican capital ahead of their crucial last-16 fixture.

Concerns have arisen regarding potential espionage from their Latin American opponents, who might attempt to monitor England’s training sessions. The team’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, is reportedly “adamant” that his tactical plans will remain confidential until the match begins.

The squad is expected to arrive in Mexico City on Friday, just two days before the match at the Estadio Azteca, which sits at an altitude of 7,220 feet. This environment typically leads to reduced oxygen intake for players, complicating their preparation.

There are also worries regarding the behaviour of local fans, who previously disrupted the Ecuadorian national team during their stay. Reports indicate that following Ecuador’s defeat to Mexico, fans gathered outside the team’s hotel, blasting horns and music in an attempt to prevent rest.

England’s FA is aware of similar risks threatening its squad but maintains confidence in their security measures to ensure players remain undisturbed during their stay. The association is determined to keep the team’s accommodation secret to prevent any unwanted attention or disruption.

Preparations have also included offering players natural sleep remedies and white noise devices to help mitigate any disturbances. Following the win against DR Congo, Tuchel acknowledged the challenges, stating, “We will expect that (noise outside the hotel).”

Despite the potential for external chaos, the match against Mexico represents one of the tournament’s most highly anticipated clashes, with ticket prices soaring due to demand. Some are listed at exorbitant rates, reaching as high as £27,000. Tuchel has expressed excitement for the encounter, acknowledging the obstacles they must overcome, including altitude. “More obstacles may come, but we are ready for that,” he concluded, confident in his team’s preparations.

Ultimately, as the England squad gears up for a potentially electrifying encounter in a historic venue, the blend of on-field strategies and off-field challenges will define their journey in this World Cup.
