Tuchel unveils England squad for World Cup
Thomas Tuchel unveiled his 26-man England squad for this summer’s World Cup, outlining a selection philosophy that prioritises collective strength over individual brilliance, reports BritPanorama.
The German manager articulated his approach clearly during a press conference, stating, “From day one we were clear we were trying to build the best possible team, which is not necessarily the 26 most talented players.”
Tuchel emphasised that championships are won by unified groups rather than collections of stars, describing his chosen players as “ready and committed to the idea of team spirit and being unselfish.”

Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze will now take on the number 10 position with clearly defined responsibilities. Among the unexpected selections was Ivan Toney, who had previously seen limited action under Tuchel, but his prolific scoring for Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, where he netted 32 goals in 32 appearances this season, caught the manager’s attention.
Tuchel’s decision received a “fantastic” endorsement from Al Ahli coach Matthias Jaissle, a former player under Tuchel, who highlighted Toney’s potential as a valuable addition alongside Harry Kane. Toney’s “world-class” penalty-taking credentials were also noted.
Harry Maguire’s public expression of disappointment at his exclusion surprised Tuchel, especially following their earlier discussions. “I was a bit surprised because we had a private conversation and he had the chance to express his feelings,” the manager remarked, while acknowledging Maguire’s “outstanding season” at Manchester United.
Tuchel maintained his support for the centre-backs who excelled during the autumn internationals, a time period which Maguire missed entirely. John Stones earned a spot despite limited Premier League minutes since October, with Tuchel expressing his belief in the defender’s world-class abilities. Additionally, Djed Spence was praised as the fastest player in the squad, known for his exceptional one-on-one defending skills.
