Emma Raducanu suffers early exit at French Open

Emma Raducanu has been beaten in the first round of the French Open after suffering a nightmare opening set, reports BritPanorama.

The British number one lost 6-0, 7-6 (4) to Argentina’s Solana Sierra, marking a disappointing return for the 23-year-old after a lengthy absence from competitive play.

Raducanu had chosen to compete in the closing stages of the clay-court season after spending two-and-a-half months sidelined by a post-viral illness. Prior to this match, she had advanced beyond the first round in her previous appearances at Roland Garros.

The opening set proved catastrophic for Raducanu, who lost it in merely 25 minutes without winning a single game. Her statistics painted a bleak picture: zero winners against 15 unforced errors as she struggled with her performance on court 13.

Coach Andrew Richardson, who guided her to US Open glory and recently reunited with the Briton, could do little to stop the onslaught as Raducanu faced what threatened to become one of her most humiliating defeats when trailing 4-1 in the second set. However, she gradually found her rhythm by extending rallies and forcing errors from Sierra.

Despite the signs of improvement, Raducanu could not stave off defeat as Sierra seized control of the decider, racing to a 5-1 advantage that proved insurmountable for the Briton. Ultimately, Raducanu’s match concluded with a staggering total of 42 unforced errors.

The lingering effects of illness that first struck her in early February remained evident, as Raducanu was seen bending over and coughing into her towel during a changeover while attempting to claw back to 4-3. Following a narrow defeat to Diane Parry in Strasbourg earlier in the week, she had taken some encouragement from her performance despite the loss.

Raducanu shared beforehand that she felt her health was improving after her lengthy absence, stating: “I feel a lot better. I thought I’d completely flipped it. I think there’s just been a little bit of a lingering cough recently. But I feel health-wise really good.”

Despite the early exit and the fact her time in the tournament ended with her unseeded due to her previous absence from competition, Raducanu will now focus on the grass court season, a surface on which she has typically performed well, hoping to regain full fitness and rediscover her best form.

As Raducanu looks to bounce back from this setback, many will be watching closely to see how her resilience unfurls in the upcoming months. The journey back has had its challenges, but tennis aficionados are well aware that the path to recovery is rarely linear.
