Emma Raducanu set to face Solana Sierra in French Open opener
Emma Raducanu will open her French Open campaign against Argentine clay-court specialist Solana Sierra following Thursday’s draw at Roland Garros, reports BritPanorama.
The British number one enters the tournament without a seeding after dropping to 37th in the world rankings. Raducanu’s clay-court preparation has been severely limited, with just one match on the surface this season following her opening-round defeat to Diane Parry in Strasbourg.
The 64th-ranked Sierra, a 21-year-old who exited in the first round during her maiden main draw appearance last year, represents a manageable opening test for the 2021 US Open champion. The draw could have proved far more challenging for Raducanu, who faced the possibility of meeting one of the world’s elite players in the opening round.
Should she overcome Sierra, a considerably tougher obstacle awaits in the form of 13th seed Jasmine Paolini, the Italian who reached the 2024 final. Paolini must first navigate past Dayana Yastremska to set up that potential encounter.
There is some encouragement for Raducanu’s prospects: the Italian has managed only two victories on clay throughout this season. The British player would not face second seed Elena Rybakina until the fourth round, should she progress that far. The pair were originally scheduled to face each other at the Italian Open earlier this year, but Raducanu withdrew from that tournament due to illness.
Sierra should not be underestimated despite the relatively favourable draw for the British player. The Argentine has produced impressive performances across the European clay swing this season and demonstrated her grass-court capabilities with an unexpected run to the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.
Raducanu has endured difficult Grand Slam draws throughout 2025, suffering early exits against Iga Swiatek, Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka at the season’s previous major championships.
Katie Boulter, Britain’s second-ranked player, will begin her Roland Garros campaign against American teenager and wildcard Akasha Urhobo. Francesca Jones, the sole other British woman in the singles draw, faces a stern examination against Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, who reached the semi-finals in 2023.
On the men’s side, 20th seed Cameron Norrie opens against Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, whilst Jacob Fearnley could earn a blockbuster second-round meeting with world number one Jannik Sinner if he defeats Juan Manuel Cerundolo.
Amidst the trials of the draw, Raducanu’s path, though rife with challenges, hints at the unpredictable nature of the sport — how quickly fortunes can turn with a single match.
