Djokovic faces crowd hostility but secures win in French Open second round

Novak Djokovic booed during French Open victory

Novak Djokovic faced a chorus of boos during his second-round match at the French Open, ultimately defeating home favourite Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3, reports BritPanorama.

The 39-year-old Serbian, seeded third, struggled to find favour with the crowd on Court Philippe Chatrier, expressing visible frustration at the spectator noise during pivotal moments of the match.

The atmosphere intensified as Djokovic saved a critical break point in the fourth set, and in response, gestured for silence from the crowd. After the match, he remarked, “It’s a very important victory. The conditions are difficult for players. I had chances in the third set and it was my fault because I was twice a break up.”

Royer, ranked 74th in the world, was aiming for a significant upset against a top-10 opponent and entertained the crowd with a spirited performance. He notably came back from being a break down twice in the third set, eventually winning the tie-break despite facing a match point.

Djokovic, reflecting on the match, added, “That’s enough. I’ve played two matches, and I feel like I’ve played two weeks. When I had a match point in the tie-break, I was too passive, and he took advantage. It’s very, very hot, but I’m happy to get through.”

The match saw Djokovic save three more match points during the concluding set and manage a crucial break of serve that helped him secure the win. This victory marks the continuation of Djokovic’s impressive streak of reaching the third round at Roland Garros for 21 consecutive years.

Looking ahead, Djokovic’s next challenge will be a match against Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, who reached the third round following a remarkable comeback against Dino Prizmic.

Djokovic’s win over Royer extends his winning run against French players to 30 matches, emphasizing his dominance in this arena. As the tournament progresses, the dynamics of crowd interaction and player performance continue to evolve in intriguing ways, reminding us of the intricate intersection of sport and public sentiment.
