Chris Hughton reveals prostate cancer diagnosis and recovery
Chris Hughton, the former Premier League manager known for his roles at Brighton, Newcastle, Norwich, and Birmingham, has disclosed that he received a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2025, reports BritPanorama.
The 67-year-old underwent surgery to remove his prostate in May 2025 and has since made a full recovery. Hughton, whose last managerial role was with Ghana’s national side, is now cancer-free.
Upon learning of his diagnosis, Hughton maintained remarkable composure. “The news certainly didn’t scare me,” he said. “I know everyone is different, but my first impression was: ‘I’ll be fine.'” This mindset helped him confront the illness without fear.
Initially identified during a routine health examination while he was with Brighton, the cancer was detected as part of a screening programme facilitated by the League Managers Association. During his regular six-month blood tests, medical professionals noted an increase in his prostate-specific antigen levels.
The early detection proved vital, allowing Hughton to begin treatment swiftly and achieve a complete recovery. “I didn’t instantly think ‘this is probably just going to kill me,'” he explained, adding that he thought, “Ok, we’ll have to do what we have to do.”
Describing his recuperation, Hughton shared that he feels energetic and well, one year post-operation. “I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place,” he stated. He attributes part of his recovery to staying physically and mentally engaged.
Hughton hopes that by sharing his experience, he can encourage others to prioritise their health and undergo regular screenings. The importance of regular check-ups has never been clearer, particularly for individuals in higher-risk categories, such as those over 50 or with familial histories of prostate cancer.
In a professional landscape that often places great strain on personal health, Hughton’s journey serves as both a reminder and an inspiration for others to confront their health challenges proactively. His story underscores the significance of early detection and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
