Chelsea edge Leeds to reach FA Cup final as Enzo Fernandez scores decisive goal

Chelsea secures FA Cup final spot with narrow victory over Leeds

Chelsea have progressed to the FA Cup final after beating Leeds 1-0 at Wembley, reports BritPanorama.

Captain Enzo Fernandez was the difference maker for Calum McFarlane’s side, his 23rd-minute header separating the two teams on the day.

The match, at times devoid of quality, reflected a level of nervousness, particularly from the Leeds players, but Chelsea’s early dominance ultimately paid off. Though the atmosphere before kick-off was intense, the football on display was rather flat, with Chelsea asserting control over possession while Leeds struggled to make an impact.

Leeds produced the first meaningful chance of the game, with Brendan Aaronson being set up by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. However, it was Chelsea who drew first blood. After earlier chances without a breakthrough, Joao Pedro’s quick thinking played through Pedro Neto in the box, where he delivered a precise cross for Fernandez, allowing him to guide the ball into the net. The goal marked Fernandez’s 13th of the season, a vital contribution as Chelsea needed him to perform. Throughout the match, Fernandez was a constant presence, dictating play and escaping Leeds’ attempts to contain him.

As Chelsea managed the game, Leeds struggled with their rhythm. Their midfield duo of Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka found it difficult to impose themselves, compounded by the absence of key orchestrator Anton Stach, sidelined with an ankle injury since the quarter-finals. A tense performance from Leeds was palpable among the 33,000 travelling fans, whose nervous energy was reflected on the pitch when Struijk carelessly lost possession.

In the second half, Stach’s introduction spurred Leeds somewhat, leading to a strong effort that forced a superb save from Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. However, the change in tactics that Leeds employed—switching to four at the back to bolster their midfield—did not translate into a sustained threat. The match saw frequent stoppages, from rejections of appeals to moments of player breaks, which interrupted flow but highlighted tactical adjustments.

As the clock wound down, Chelsea maintained control of the game and executed their strategy effectively, despite Leeds’ late attempts to find an equaliser, which were ultimately toothless. Chelsea emerged victorious as they booked a place in the final against Premier League giants Manchester City, setting the stage for a highly anticipated clash next month.

In the end, while the scoresheet will shine with Chelsea’s name, the game served as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift in the unforgiving world of knockout football, revealing the razor-thin margins that define success and failure at this level.
