Brentford thrashes Tottenham in Premier League opener
Brentford delivered a stunning performance against Tottenham, winning 3-0 in their Premier League opener at the Gtech Community Stadium. Despite Tottenham’s significant summer expenditure of approximately £237 million, including a record £100 million signing of Sandro Tonali, their efforts fell flat, reports BritPanorama.
Four new signings for Tottenham — Tonali, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke — were fielded from the start. However, they were outperformed by Brentford, who took the lead within 12 minutes when Keane Lewis-Potter finished unmarked after being set up by Mamadou Sangare, Brentford’s record summer signing.
Brentford’s dominance continued, with Vitaly Janelt scoring the second goal after Antonin Kinsky, Tottenham’s goalkeeper, parried a shot from Mathias Jensen. At half-time, Tottenham had failed to register a single shot on target while their opponents showcased relentless intensity and offensive strategy. Manager Roberto de Zerbi responded by substituting £85 million recruit Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur for underperforming players Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall.
However, these changes did little to reverse the tide. Brentford’s Kayode scored the third goal after Sangare’s attempt was saved, leaving the Tottenham defence in disarray. Things nearly took a downturn for Spurs when Bentancur fouled Kevin Schade in the penalty area but Spurs were spared further embarrassment as Igor Thiago’s spot-kick hit the post.
Collins, the Brentford captain, expressed his satisfaction after the match, stating, “It’s the start we wanted. We wanted to start bright, start sharp and we want to show what we’re made of. That’s today.” He added that last season’s near-miss from European qualification had motivated the team to perform better this time around, noting the improvement in squad quality.
On Sangare’s debut, Collins remarked that while it was a solid start, he expected “more goals from him, more tackles.” Brentford’s impressive display, which included a record 26 shots against Tottenham, marked a striking beginning to their season and raised questions about Tottenham’s management of their lavish summer investments.
This match serves as a striking reminder of the unpredictable nature of football, where heavy spending does not always correlate with immediate success, and the stakes are higher than ever in this new campaign.
