West Ham suffer setback as Castellanos misses late penalty in Charlton defeat

West Ham’s frustrating start continues with defeat to Charlton

West Ham United suffered another frustrating afternoon as Charlton Athletic secured a 2-1 victory at the London Stadium, with Valentin Castellanos missing a last-minute penalty to complete a miserable day for the hosts, reports BritPanorama.

The Hammers, playing their first home Championship game following relegation from the Premier League, were left to rue a sluggish start as Charlton made the perfect beginning to the south London derby. The visitors took the lead after just seven minutes when captain Lloyd Jones produced an acrobatic overhead kick that beat West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side struggled to find a response before the interval, prompting the manager to make a change at half-time by introducing Lewis Orford to inject more energy into midfield. However, Charlton doubled their advantage 11 minutes after the restart when Tyreece Campbell found the bottom corner in the 56th minute, leaving West Ham facing a steep climb to avoid a second consecutive draw or defeat at the start of their promotion campaign.

There was a glimmer of hope for the hosts when new signing Joel Piroe pulled a goal back in the 74th minute. The forward, making his full debut after arriving from Leeds United, reacted swiftly from close range to give West Ham a chance of salvaging a point from a game that had seemed to drift away from them. As the match neared its conclusion, the Hammers pushed for an equaliser and were handed a golden opportunity when awarded a penalty in stoppage time.

Castellanos stepped up with the chance to level the contest and potentially rescue a point for West Ham. Instead, the forward missed from the spot, leaving the home crowd stunned and Charlton celebrating a memorable victory. The result means West Ham are still searching for their first Championship win after opening the campaign with a 2-2 draw at Burnley.

For Charlton, this victory marks an impressive start to life in the Championship after they defeated Derby County on the opening weekend. West Ham’s next challenge will be to convert possession and late pressure into meaningful results. After two games without a victory, Espirito Santo will know that significant work lies ahead if the Hammers are to forge a path back to the Premier League.

It’s a stark reminder of how early season hopes can quickly be diluted by missed opportunities; a single kick could have rewritten the narrative yet again. The pressure is mounting, and the road ahead is anything but straightforward.
