Brad Pitt’s appearance at World Cup quarter-final draws attention
Brad Pitt sent football fans into a frenzy after turning up to a World Cup quarter-final wearing a shirt that nobody expected. The Hollywood icon was among the crowd at Los Angeles Stadium as Spain edged past Belgium 2-1 to book their place in the World Cup semi-finals, reports BritPanorama.
Yet it was Pitt’s outfit, rather than the action on the pitch, that quickly became a talking point on social media. Instead of wearing the colours of either quarter-finalist, the Oscar-winning actor arrived sporting a United States jersey despite the host nation having already been knocked out of the tournament.
The choice immediately caught the attention of supporters because it was Belgium who had ended the USA’s World Cup dream. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were swept aside 4-1 by the Red Devils in the round of 16, ending hopes of a memorable run on home soil. With Belgium now facing Spain for a place in the last four, many supporters joked that Pitt had turned up hoping to see the team responsible for America’s elimination crash out as well.
One fan wrote: “Brad Pitt doing a successful hatewatch of Belgium.” Another joked: “That’s hilarious. Brad Pitt just showed up to hate on Belgium. He doesn’t even care about Spain.” A third supporter took a different view, writing: “Brad Pitt doesn’t have to support or hate them. He just wants to see a good game.”
Spain eventually progressed after a dramatic finish. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who had been introduced as a substitute, spilled the ball late on, allowing Mikel Merino to convert from close range and seal a dramatic 2-1 victory for La Roja. The decisive goal sent Belgium out of the competition and ensured Spain would advance to a mouth-watering semi-final against France.
Pitt was accompanied in the stands by his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, and acclaimed Spanish actor Javier Bardem. Bardem’s wife, Penelope Cruz, was also there. Unlike Pitt, both De Ramon, Bardem, and Cruz embraced the occasion by wearing Spain shirts as they celebrated Merino’s late winner. Spain’s reward is a blockbuster semi-final against France after Didier Deschamps’ side defeated Morocco 2-0 to continue their pursuit of a third World Cup title.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring shortly after the hour mark before Ousmane Dembele doubled France’s advantage six minutes later to put the result beyond doubt. England, Norway, Argentina and Switzerland are battling to make the last four on the other half of the draw.
In the grand theatre of football, where every touch of the ball can alter destinies, it’s the unassuming presence of an A-lister that can steal the show, reminding us that rivalries don’t just exist on the pitch — they can mingle with Hollywood glamour too.
