Power outage disrupts World Snooker Championship semi-final broadcast

Snooker fans were unexpectedly treated to images of grazing sheep instead of gameplay as the BBC’s coverage of the World Championship semi-final faced a technical disruption this evening, reports BritPanorama.

The live feed from the Crucible Theatre was halted during the match between Mark Allen and 22-year-old Chinese player Wu Yize due to a power failure at the Sheffield venue. Viewers tuning in for the third frame were left bewildered when their screens froze, cutting to an error message before switching to wildlife programme Britain’s Wild Isles.

The broadcast went off air at 19:51 and remained unavailable for approximately 12 minutes, frustrating fans who missed the conclusion of the third frame. During this time, rather than watching Wu line up his next shot, viewers were left watching footage of ewes grazing.

Coverage returned on BBC iPlayer and TNT, although BBC Two viewers experienced a longer wait before their screens flickered back to life. By the time the broadcast resumed, Allen had already secured the frame, reducing Wu’s lead to 2-1. The Northern Irishman had been 31-0 ahead and preparing for a shot when the power cut occurred, preventing viewers from seeing how he closed it out.

Presenter Hazel Irvine issued an apology when the broadcast eventually resumed, infusing her remarks with a touch of humour. “Welcome back to Sheffield and our apologies for the interruption to our evening at the Crucible in this second semi-final,” she stated. “We had a rather unexpected power issue. Nothing to do with not feeding the meter I assure you.” She later added, “So we lost power but Mark Allen did not. He took frame three to get his semi-final campaign under way.”

In the aftermath, one viewer quipped on social media, “The break in BBC Two’s snooker transmission is bigger than most of the players have managed.”

Such unexpected events remind us of the vulnerabilities in live sports broadcasting, where even the most exciting moments can be overshadowed by external factors.
