Mikel Arteta defends Arsenal’s style after Champions League progression
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has addressed criticism regarding his team’s playing style following their aggregate victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, reports BritPanorama.
The Gunners secured a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium, which, combined with a 1-0 win away from home, was enough to send them through to the semi-finals.
Arsenal will now face Atletico Madrid, who advanced past Barcelona with a 3-2 aggregate score. Despite reaching the last four, Arteta’s side has been under fire for the way they have played. However, the manager stood firm, asserting that the team’s performance has been effective in achieving the necessary results.
Arteta stated: “It does, and you have to be better than the opponent. I think we had many periods in the game when we were there, but we didn’t score the goal; we didn’t finalise the action well enough.” He added, “At this moment as well, it’s about the way you compete, and when you’re going to go and win titles, that’s what’s going to define the moments. We certainly did that tonight.”
This season marks Arsenal’s first occasion achieving back-to-back semi-finals in either the Champions League or European Cup. Arteta noted that his team is the only remaining English side in the competition, highlighting the unique pressures of the league structure. “There is a reason why we are the only English team in the competition, because this league and this schedule takes the hell out of you,” he said.
Stand-in captain Declan Rice praised the team’s resilience, completing the match despite illness. “To go back-to-back semi-finals is an amazing achievement for this group. We now want to go one step further than last year and get to the final,” he told TNT Sports. On the criticism of the team’s style, Rice remarked, “Who cares what people think? All that matters is what this group think, what the manager thinks, and we’re in another semi-final.”
As Arsenal prepares for an important clash with Manchester City this Sunday, the focus remains on continuing their strong performance amid external scrutiny. “It’s a rollercoaster. Nobody’s going to hand you anything in this game. Let’s keep going, and what will be will be. Let’s keep going strong,” Arteta concluded.
The looming encounter with City promises to further test Arsenal’s mettle, a reminder of the continual contest that is both thrilling and challenging within the landscape of Premier League football.
