Manchester City secure FA Cup victory over Chelsea

Manchester City have lifted the FA Cup for a third time under Pep Guardiola after Antoine Semenyo produced an absolutely sensational backheel finish to sink Chelsea at Wembley, reports BritPanorama.

The forward’s moment of magic arrived in the 70th minute, breaking the deadlock in what had been a tense and cagey final marked by both teams’ desperation for silverware.

For Chelsea, this result extends their miserable run at the national stadium, marking a record seventh consecutive domestic cup final defeat at Wembley. In contrast, City’s victory is a source of jubilation, further solidifying Guardiola’s illustrious career as he adds another piece of silverware in what could be his final season.

The goal itself was a thing of beauty, igniting the City fans in attendance. Bernardo Silva played the ball to Erling Haaland on the right, who unselfishly laid it back for Semenyo instead of taking the shot himself. Semenyo then executed a cheeky flick around the corner, spinning the ball into the far post beyond Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea’s defence, which had previously appeared solid, suddenly looked disorganized following City’s breakthrough. City had dominated early possession, yet clear chances proved elusive until that decisive moment. Haaland had an earlier opportunity when Reece James was dispossessed, but he missed the target, extending his struggles in finals to nine games without a goal.

As the second half progressed, Chelsea began to grow into the match, with Moises Caicedo coming close with a header that was cleared off the line by Rodri. The Blues also had several penalty appeals waved away by referee Darren England, with VAR backing the decisions each time.

Following the goal, Chelsea faced the prospect of an unwanted piece of history, now cementing their position as the team with the most consecutive domestic cup final losses at Wembley, having previously lost three League Cups and three FA Cups.

As Chelsea pushed forward seeking an equaliser, Enzo Fernandez attempted to loop the ball over James Trafford, only to miss the target. City nearly sealed their win, with Rayan Cherki striking the post before firing straight at Sanchez as Chelsea’s defensive structure crumbled. In the dying moments, former City player Liam Delap had a free header but sent it wide, marking what could have been a critical opportunity to salvage a draw on a painful afternoon for the London side.

In the end, the clash epitomized a season rife with twists, leaving one club basking in the afterglow of victory while the other grapples with the weight of continued disappointment.
