Adam Peaty faces family tensions over name change for Commonwealth Games

Adam Peaty is facing fresh family tensions after deciding to compete under the surname Ramsay-Peaty at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, reports BritPanorama.

The 31-year-old married Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, in a high-profile ceremony at Bath Abbey in December. Peaty has since adopted the double-barrelled surname Ramsay-Peaty, with the updated name set to appear on official start lists when he returns to major championship action later this summer.

However, this decision has reportedly sparked anger among some members of his estranged family, who feel disheartened by the change. Sources indicated that they believe Peaty is leveraging the prominence of the Ramsay name while distancing himself from his roots.

A source quoted by the Daily Mail claimed, “As much as Adam wants to be a Ramsay, he is not. He is a Peaty. Adam has financial control and is cashing in on the Ramsay name because it opens doors.”

Further sentiments echoed these accusations, asserting that Peaty is “playing a role” and emphasizing the value of loyalty and integrity over wealth. “When you live to be famous, you aren’t living, you are playing a role. Fame is but fleeting but family is forever,” they added.

Peaty has not publicly addressed these latest claims. The three-time Olympic champion is currently preparing for a landmark appearance at the Commonwealth Games, where he aims to become the first British swimmer to win gold medals at four consecutive editions of the event.

His international journey began in Glasgow in 2014, where he has since secured four Commonwealth titles and three silver medals. Peaty earned his place on Team England by winning the 100 metres breaststroke at the Aquatics GB Championships in April, making him the oldest member of England’s 42-strong swimming squad.

Reflecting on the significance of this event, Peaty remarked, “Being selected to represent your country is always an honour, and there is something special about a home Commonwealth Games. The event also marks a significant milestone in my international career, which began in Glasgow 12 years ago at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”

The upcoming Commonwealth Games will be Peaty’s first major competition since his marriage to Holly. The couple has emerged as one of British sport’s most prominent partnerships, with Peaty frequently acknowledging the support he receives from both his wife and her family. Gordon Ramsay has also publicly backed his son-in-law, while Peaty’s mother is reported to be “devastated” after being banned from the wedding.

As the spotlight focuses on Adam Peaty’s athletic talents, the intertwining threads of family dynamics and public identity continue to unravel, highlighting a poignant intersection of sport and personal life.
