Russian drones kill two at Ukraine-Moldova border crossing
Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova in the southern region of Odesa, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, according to Ukrainian and Moldovan officials, as Moscow intensifies its targeting of trade and logistics routes to inflict economic damage, reports BritPanorama.
In the attack on the Starokozache border crossing, two civilians were killed, and three others sustained injuries, as confirmed by Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper via Telegram. This checkpoint, situated roughly one kilometre from Moldovan territory, is a vital transit point used daily by thousands.
The incident has halted passenger and vehicle traffic, causing significant disruption. Ukrainian border guards noted that Russia has recently targeted five border crossings, with four assaults aimed at the Moldova border and one targeted at the border with Romania, a NATO member.
Further escalating regional tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s flight from Moldova to Norway was also delayed due to a drone incursion which resulted in the temporary closure of the country’s airspace. Zelensky’s plane was affected when a Russian drone explosion occurred approximately 160 kilometres from Chișinău International Airport.
Moldovan authorities reported that the drone, which entered their airspace, subsequently crossed into Romania, drawing attention to the wider implications of Russian drone operations. In another incident, a drone had crashed in Moldova, igniting four fires in a sunflower field but causing no injuries.
The increasing frequency of such drone attacks signifies a worrying trend as Russia maintains its offensive operations along Ukraine’s borders, prompting ongoing concerns about regional stability and the safety of air travel in nearby areas.
