France withdraws support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino
Gianni Infantino has encountered another setback as the French Football Federation (FFF) has retracted its support for the FIFA President. This decision reflects ongoing discontent regarding his leadership, particularly surrounding the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise Plan (FFE), which proposed selling stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors, reports BritPanorama.
Several European football associations, including England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, have already distanced themselves from Infantino. The FFF confirmed its position in a statement, underscoring that the conditions for support were no longer satisfied.
The FFF’s statement pointed to a “series of events directly involving FIFA’s governance and its president” which have contradicted the core principles of good governance and the values of football. Although the FFE project has been abandoned through collective action within UEFA and other confederations, the issues surrounding FIFA’s governance remain unresolved.
In light of these developments, the FFF announced its withdrawal of support for Infantino ahead of the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027. Despite this, a spokesman for Infantino confirmed that there has been no change regarding his candidacy.
Infantino’s future remains uncertain, particularly following a recent appearance where he avoided questions regarding his presidential ambitions while attending the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. He expressed his intent to continue promoting football but refrained from commenting on whether he would run in next year’s election.
Amidst these controversies, UEFA, along with Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation, has vocally opposed Infantino. They issued a joint letter accusing him of breaking their trust “through deception” and have intensified calls for his resignation. Conversely, Infantino received backing from U.S. President Donald Trump, who labelled any potential removal as a “terrible mistake”.
As Infantino prepares for the upcoming election, opposition parties are poised to demand clarity on the circumstances that led to the enterprise proposal and the perceived lack of transparency. Infantino appears determined to battle for his position, making the upcoming election a critical juncture for FIFA’s governance and future.
