UK to host Zelensky for state visit in 2027
The UK is expected to host Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky for a state visit in 2027, it is understood, reports BritPanorama.
This visit aims to project solidarity with Ukraine as it enters the fifth year of its war against Russia. The Financial Times first reported that the UK government is considering the timing of the event, although it has yet to be determined.
Government officials have indicated that while the visit is not finalised, it is anticipated to proceed. Mr. Zelensky is also invited to the G20 summit in Manchester next November; however, the state visit is expected to be scheduled separately.
The planned visit could heighten tensions with US President Donald Trump, who has expressed criticism of Mr. Zelensky in recent weeks. Trump’s rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid the ongoing conflict, adds further complexity to diplomatic relations.
Typically, a state visit in the UK includes a grand banquet; however, this occasion is likely to be tailored to reflect Mr. Zelensky’s status as a wartime leader. Since the onset of the conflict, he has visited the UK approximately 13 times, most recently meeting with Andy Burnham in Downing Street, where he received an unprecedented guard of honour from the Irish Guards.
During that meeting, Mr. Burnham reiterated Britain’s unwavering support for Ukraine, stating, “We are behind you and that will not change.” A Downing Street spokesperson noted that the leaders discussed Russia’s indiscriminate attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure, emphasizing that the Kremlin demonstrated no interest in peace.
Mr. Zelensky has had prior engagements with prominent UK figures, including Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the King, who would be the host during the state visit. In 2023, he addressed members of Parliament, and a similar address is likely should the visit proceed, as reported by the FT.
