Britain is set to develop a new ballistic missile system, named Nightfall, intended to target Russian positions deep within occupied territories, reports BritPanorama.
The Nightfall missiles will be armed with 200 kg warheads and possess a range of 310 miles, allowing them to reach significant cities, including as far as Moscow from the front lines.
These missiles are designed for rapid launch from vehicles, enabling multiple strikes before Russian forces can mount a response.
British companies are being invited to apply for a £9 million contract to design, develop, and produce the first three missiles for testing.
Defence Secretary John Healey disclosed Project Nightfall during his visit to Ukraine, where he experienced a near miss from a Russian missile attack. He stated, “You defend your cities by having layers of defence, and you partly defend by being able to attack.”
This announcement follows a horrific missile strike that killed four people in Kyiv, as well as drone attacks targeting various locations. Healey noted that he had a “close shave” near Lviv during this recent attack.
“We won’t stand for this and are determined to put leading edge weapons into the hands of Ukrainians as they fight back,” Healey added, underscoring the UK’s commitment to support Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
Western allies, including Britain and France, are preparing for a potential peacekeeping mission should a ceasefire be established between Ukraine and Russia, with the US expected to oversee the agreement.
While efforts continue to address the conflict, the situation remains tense, with President Vladimir Putin escalating his attacks. Healey emphasized the solidarity among nations, saying, “The fact 39 nations have signed up in public as part of the Coalition of the Willing — led by the UK with France — says to Putin: ‘You’ve got a large number of nations here with Ukraine long term.’”
The UK will also begin producing advanced drones designed to intercept Russian missiles, enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
A Javelin to Putin
A Ukrainian soldier was recently observed launching a Javelin anti-tank missile during a training exercise, showcasing the continued preparations of Ukrainian forces amid the ongoing conflict.
Russian missile assaults, including a notable strike on Lviv, form part of a broader campaign that also involved a reported 200 drones aimed at Kyiv.
