Fatal crash following police pursuit leaves seven dead in Middlesbrough
Seven people, including two police officers, have died in a crash following a pursuit in the early hours of Saturday, reports BritPanorama.
A Volkswagen Passat was driving the wrong way down the A66 near Middlesbrough when it collided with a marked police vehicle heading in the correct direction, according to Cleveland Police.
The two serving police officers in the marked vehicle and five civilians travelling in the Passat were pronounced dead at the scene after the incident at 3:39 a.m. on Saturday.
Authorities are still working to formally identify all occupants of the Volkswagen Passat. Families of the identified individuals have been informed and are receiving specialist support.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the events leading to the crash in South Bank after receiving a mandatory referral from the force. Cleveland Police indicated that officers spotted a suspicious vehicle, prompting the pursuit before the collision occurred.
The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston. Police have established a cordon at the scene, ensuring the crash site is not visible from the road closures.
A large tent has been erected over the collision site, which is surrounded by multiple emergency service vehicles. In addition, a drone exclusion zone is in force around the area.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police stated that the force will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation, urging people to avoid speculation while the inquiry unfolds.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed his devastation over the fatalities, calling it a tragic incident. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the crash as devastating, stating her thoughts are with all affected.
Local MP Anna Turley noted the A66 will remain closed and urged the public to find alternative routes, conveying her condolences to the families impacted by the tragic loss.
Councillors David Taylor and Stephen Martin from the Eston ward expressed their deep sadness over the “unimaginable tragedy,” referring to the incident as heartbreaking for the local community.
Cleveland Police Federation chairwoman Lauren Somerville reflected on the profound sense of loss felt by the Cleveland Police family, emphasizing support for the families of the fallen officers and pledging to honour their sacrifice in due time.
