Research warns of potential £35 billion annual cost for UK if it rejoins the EU

Researchers have warned that Britain could face a £35 billion-a-year bill if it were to rejoin the European Union, a figure that nearly doubles the UK’s gross contributions prior to Brexit, reports BritPanorama.

This substantial estimate originates from the pro-Brexit group Britain Unbound and is aligned with Brussels’ proposed budget plans for 2028 to 2034. Euro chiefs are seeking to increase EU spending to nearly €2 trillion over the seven-year period.

The proposed budget also entails new taxes on carbon emissions, electronic waste, tobacco sales, and larger corporations, which could further amplify the financial implications for the UK.

Steve Wright, head of Britain Unbound, emphasized the importance of presenting a realistic argument for rejoining the EU, stating, “Those who wish to rejoin the EU should present their argument in the harsh reality of the present day, not a rose-tinted picture of 2016.”

The projections assume a hypothetical scenario where the UK joins the EU in 2028 without securing any rebate or opt-outs. These findings are expected to catalyse increased scrutiny of the Labour Party’s policies regarding Europe.

Incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham has previously expressed a desire for the UK to rejoin the EU “in my lifetime,” though he has since moderated this stance. Recently, Sir Keir Starmer’s EU negotiator, Nick Thomas-Symonds, labelled the notion of rejoining an “unrealistic mirage.”

Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel has argued that a return to the EU would inevitably lead to “yet more tax rises.”

The complexities of Britain’s potential re-entry into the EU continue to provoke debate, underscoring the intricate considerations facing policymakers in light of evolving economic landscapes.
