Ukraine has reported a wave of drone attacks targeting multiple locations in Russia, including significant strikes on an oil refinery in Ryazan and residential areas in Rostov-on-Don, resulting in injuries to civilians, reports BritPanorama.

Explosions were heard in key cities, with the governor of Rostov confirming that air defenses intercepted approximately 30 drones. Two apartment buildings were damaged, and a child was taken to hospital due to injuries sustained during the incident.

The oil refinery in Ryazan, which constitutes around 5% of Russia’s refining capacity, suffered damage that has raised concerns about operational capabilities. This refinery has previously been a target of Ukrainian drone strikes, most recently experiencing shut downs in July.

In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an ongoing push for European governments to reactivate plans regarding €210 billion (£180.4 billion) in frozen Russian assets. This move aims to bolster Ukraine’s financing for its defense efforts amidst a projected €27 billion (£23.2 billion) funding gap for 2026. Countries such as the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden have expressed support for the initiative, while Belgium continues to oppose it due to associated legal risks.

Meanwhile, Moscow’s response to the ongoing attacks has included a temporary halt of military operations against Kyiv after a request was made through diplomatic channels by U.S. envoys. This ceasefire has been positioned as a goodwill gesture, allowing high-level discussions between U.S. representatives and Ukrainian officials to proceed unimpeded.

While dialogues continue amidst intensified military activities, the impact of these drone strikes underscores the persistent volatility in the region. For observers, the situation remains fluid and intricately linked to the broader geopolitical landscape.
