Job creation initiative for unemployed youth in UK theme parks
Merlin Entertainments has announced the creation of 300 job opportunities for young people claiming Universal Credit in the coming three years, reports BritPanorama.
The initiative aims to support jobless youngsters by providing career pathways at major attractions, including Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures, and Legoland Windsor. Young recruits may work in various capacities ranging from rollercoaster engineering and ride maintenance to retail, hospitality, and guest services.
This initiative is part of the UK Government’s Youth Guarantee programme, designed to facilitate the entry of young people into the workforce or training. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden stated, “Every young person deserves the chance to earn or learn, and we’re supporting great British employers to back our young people, and put them on track for success.”
Merlin’s chief executive, Fiona Eastwood, emphasized the importance of this scheme, noting, “This is a practical, positive step that helps businesses like Merlin invest in young people with confidence while giving them the skills, experience and support to grow and progress.”
Currently, approximately a million young people in Britain are classified as NEET (not in education, employment, or training). The latest data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that in the first quarter of 2026, 1,012,000 individuals aged 16 to 24 were NEET, representing a troubling increase from previous figures.
With 13.5% of all young people in the UK excluded from work, education, and training, the crisis appears to be deepening. There are warnings that if urgent actions are not taken, a “lost generation” of NEET youth could reach 1.25 million within five years.
The current landscape illustrates a pressing need for initiatives that engage and support the youth, particularly as young men are noted to be disproportionately affected by the ongoing job crisis.
This new jobs drive underscores a collective effort to address youth unemployment in the UK and reflects a commitment to nurturing the next generation of workers.
