Keir Starmer’s £15 billion defence budget faces funding challenges
Keir Starmer’s government has announced a significant pledge of £15 billion for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) over the next four years, a move described as a £5 billion “budget time bomb” by rival Andy Burnham due to its unfunded nature, reports BritPanorama.
This funding is set to be allocated as part of the delayed Defence Investment Plan, but only £10.3 billion has been secured, primarily through cuts targeting other government departments. The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, indicated that the remaining £4.7 billion would need to be “confirmed at Budget 2026, in a fair and balanced way.”
The breakdown reveals that the MoD’s budget includes £11.6 billion in cash over the next four years and £3.4 billion identified through what defence insiders have dubbed “Treasury trickery.” To support these allocations, other departments have been instructed to implement 1% savings, further straining resources.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has had to contribute £2 billion, while the Department of Transport was squeezed for £800 million, inciting frustration among government officials. Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer expressed concern over the uncertainties affecting strategic projects in his constituency, specifically pointing out the anticipated upgrades to the A46 Newark bypass, which he described as “well advanced” and critical.
Furthermore, approximately £400 million is anticipated to be raised from the sale of MoD land, which would assist in financing the ambitious defence spending plan.
